A message on the election from the WCDP Chair, Ragan Grossman

Last night, voters across the country sent a clear message demanding change. Here in Williamson County, we didn't get the election results we worked so hard for. However, Tennesseans spoke loudly at the ballot box. Please don’t mistake a disappointing election night for a lack of progress. We have moved mountains, and we have every reason to be proud.

Two statewide Democratic candidates (Green and Bradshaw) earned 43% of the vote. Think about that. We are not a fringe movement or a handful of voices in a sea of opposition. We are more than one in three Tennesseans. And while gerrymandering may create barriers to representation, it cannot erase the voices, values, and growing influence of the people behind those numbers. Justin Pearson came up short by just 2500 votes (48.5%) in a newly carved district that spans fifteen counties including the eastern part of Williamson. Insignificant minority parties don’t see these kinds of numbers in a district designed for the majority to easily win.

Over the past several years, our county party has worked tirelessly to build a foundation, recruit and train candidates, grow our grassroots organization, and give Democrats a reason to believe that change is possible right here at home. And that work is paying off. We helped elect Democrats to local office in Williamson County for the first time ever. That is history. That is progress. And that is the reason we received the TNDP’s coveted “One to Watch” award this year out of all 95 counties in Tennessee.

So be proud of all your hard work and how far we've come. We must celebrate the victories, learn from the losses, and remember that none of these efforts are wasted. Every candidate recruited, every volunteer engaged, every door knocked, and every new voter reached brings us closer to the community and the representation we are working toward.

We are here. We are growing. We are making history. And we are just getting started.
